Newsletter 1 - January 31st 2020

Dear School Friends and Families

I hope everyone had a good summer break and managed to make the most of the weather, when it cooperated. It has been great to see the students arriving back with enthusiasm, ready for a new year and wonderful too, to be welcoming new students and their families. As well as seven new students we have two new staff members. Toni Evans and Sarah Falconer are teaching in rooms one and two respectively and have had a good start with their classes. Welcome to you both. Andrew Watson has been working behind the scenes over the holiday period but is now officially on leave, we wish him all the best for the year and look forward to hearing about his adventures when he returns.

Our school has had a bit of a spruce up over the break and the grounds are looking marvellous, I need to thank a number of people who are responsible for this. The garden between room one and the gate has been replaced by gabion baskets with wood between them to create seats. This was completed by Lucas and Gabriella with Seby’s help and looks just amazing, they have even created a bespoke catch for the gate which is working well. We’ve also had members of the BOT and FOLS working in and around the school doing some grounds maintenance, making the school look nice and tidy for our start back. Thank you also to the families that have been keeping the lawns mowed and to the parents that have freshened up our school hats and vests. I know I will have unintentionally missed some people out, but please know that all of your help is greatly appreciated.

Well underway is the building project that is updating the two art bays and turning the hallway into an additional learning area. The structural work has been completed and we’re now waiting on windows and doors to be installed which should be next week. After that the painting will be done and then finally the carpet. It should all be completed by early March. Due to the construction, Room 4 has been set up in the library this week where they have had a really good start to the year.

There are a lot of events happening this term including Swimming lessons, Athletics and Life Education. We’re also going to pop down to the swimming pool next Wednesday afternoon for a school swim between 1:30 and 2:30. Last year we had some great helpers who came down to help with supervision. We rely on this additional assistance so if you are able to help out for an hour next week please let your child's classroom teacher know.

We are having a ‘Meet and Greet’ evening BBQ/picnic tea (BYO Food) to give everyone the opportunity to meet informally and have a chat and catch up with staff and other families. It will be Thursday 13th of February, 5-7pm. There will be more details of this in next week’s newsletter.

There is a lot of important information out this week and we do appreciate you taking the time to read it and getting back the relevant information as it’s required. Please feel free to contact your child’s teacher or myself if you have anything you need to know or any concerns. The number you reached Andrew on last year is no longer correct. If you do need to get in touch with me directly you are able to on 027 367 5130.

Have a safe and enjoyable weekend.

Ka kite ano,

Callum Tytler

The coaching programme will run each morning, 9:30am-12pm from that date until March 23rd. Parent help will be required in order to provide a safe adult:child ratio for supervision. Please contact the school if you are able to help with any of these days – Thank you.

Buddy Reading

Most Tuesday mornings for the last decade or so, Lumsden School children have benefitted from the time and dedication of community members who have come into school to sit down and read with them. It would be great to hear from anyone who would be interested in joining this buddy reading team – Please let myself, or Ethel Barnes (co-ordinator) know ph 248 7216 – Thank you!

· Top mower up with fuel, when finished and return key to Four Square Supermarket.

Bus Roll Procedure

At the end of the day, unless the school has been contacted by parents stating alternative arrangements, children will be put on their designated bus. It is important to let us know if you do not require bus transport for your child on certain days or in one-off situations.

NB: If your child is not a bus passenger on a particular bus, they may only travel on a bus with the driver’s permission. It is not a right to be able to hop on any bus at any time. The bus company is happy to help where they can but some buses are full and it is possible that this request will be declined if space/safety become an issue.

South Fuels

Thanks to the continued support of local businesses: Crofty Farm Ltd, Kerr Inverurie Trust, Walling Contracting, Driffield Farming and Barford Investments Ltd, we are well on the way to being allocated another $1,000 sports or digital hardware package. This support is hugely appreciated. If you are interested in more information about this scheme, go to www.southfuels.co.nz

Financial Contribution

The Board of Trustees respectfully ask for financial donations from each family to the value of $100 per child for the first two children and $70 for the third per annum.

We ask that you pay $25 per child (for the first two) and $17.50 for the third child for the first term by the 28th February 2020. Alternatively you may wish to pay the full annual donation as a lump sum before this date. Please make payment to Sharon in the office at school or directly into the school bank account 030960-0112624-00 (child/ren’s name as reference).

Please feel free to discuss this with Callum or Amanda Russell (BOT Chairperson 022 088 2265) if you have any other questions or concerns about this request.

Emergency Contacts

While many families have cellphones we still require the name of at least one other person we can contact in the event of an emergency or illness of your child, who could come and collect your child. If your phone number has changed please remember to advise us so we can update our records.

Privacy

Please let us know if you do not wish your child’s photo to be published in any document publically accessible e.g. newsletter, information book, school website, school facebook page.

Dental Clinic

If you need to contact the Dental Nurse please phone 0800 570 300 or alternatively 248 7699 for the Lumsden Clinic.

School Assembly

School Assembly is held each Friday afternoon in Room 3 at 2.30 – 3.00 pm. We welcome parents, grandparents and community members along to share in this time. It is an important part of our week when we all come together to reflect on the week and share in what each class has been doing. We value it as a time to reinforce our values and attitudes programme and acknowledge our students in a positive way.

We would please ask that parents of preschoolers respect that for many children it is their first time in front of a large audience and often hard to hear. Preschoolers are very welcome but we do need them to be quiet please.

Whole School Athletics Practice

The Mid Dome Athletics are going to be held at Northern Southland College on Wednesday 4th March. Your child will be training in the age group they will be competing with on the day (Age as at 31st December 2019).

Please ensure that your child comes to school wearing appropriate running shoes and clothing. Please ensure that your child has footwear that they can put on independently. Jandals and scuffs are not advised as they are not good for running in.

Please contact us if you would be happy to help with coaching athletics. Athletics skill sessions on Fridays 11.20 am – 12.00 pm.

Launchpad (formerly known as Bible in Schools)

Launchpad will commence on Friday 6th March, from 9.00 – 9.30 am. Please inform your child’s teacher in writing if you do not want them to attend. Please note that school is officially closed during this time and parents are responsible for supervising any children not attending Launchpad. We are able to provide supervision for children who come to school by bus, 9.00 – 9.30 am in the Library.

Brain Food Reminder

A reminder that there is a short break at 10.00 am for the children to have a small, healthy snack (quick and easy to eat- e.g. apple cut up) to keep them energized for their morning’s learning. Good examples are fruit, vege sticks, raisins, natural popcorn (not cake and biscuits!). Given that there are a number of children who have allergies to nuts, we suggest nuts are not brought. We are also a ‘water only’ school and encourage children to bring a full water bottle rather than rely solely on our drinking fountains.

Fonterra Milk for Schools

Please advise the school office if you do not wish your child to participate or if they cannot participate because of dairy intolerance and/or allergies.

Sunscreen

If your child is allergic to certain brands of sunscreen please send along a named bottle for your child/ren to use.

Below is our list from last year – if you would like to change the area you are helping in please amend form and send back to school.
